Aimed at creating a massive virtual information store, Freenet is a large-scale P2P network designed to last. It's open to anyone to freely publish or view information, and boasts heavy-duty security, privacy and anonymity features. Freenet is an enhanced open source implementation of the system described by Ian Clarke's 1999 paper "A distributed decentralized information storage and retrieval system." All internal processes are decentralized across the global network, making it virtually impossible for an attacker to destroy information or take control of the system. This is high-minded operation, make no mistake. From the Web site: "Freenet is an open, democratic system which cannot be controlled by any one person, not even its creators."
