Duration of ownership: 10 Weeks
Strengths: Hundreds of DVDs have been burned so far without problem.Sony's design is always good looking.
Weaknesses:nothing so far
Overall Evaluation: Compared with other brand drives, this drive maybe a little expensive. However, in my opinion, it worth the price. Despite the good design sony always be, the compatability is also excellent. I used several kinds and brands of DVD, and all of them are okay for this drive.Good drive!

Strengths: Exchangeable face plate, MULTIPLE formats, included (Nero) software
Weaknesses:Face Plate swap instructions need improving
Overall Evaluation: I needed to get a DVD burner for my computer at work and my co-worker recommended the Sony DRU-830A. It supports a LOT of different formats including Double Layer/Dual Layer. And it also has the added benefit of a swappable face plate for those of us who are vain and don't want our drives to clash with our PC boxes. It burns well so far. Haven't had any complaints. Don't know how soon I'll need to burn a dual layer disc, but I feel confident that I'll be ready when that time comes. The included directions for swapping the face plate could potentially cause you to break the face plate (and the tray if you muscle it too much). So, take your time and watch what you are doing.Since my co-worker had just recently done this, he had it off in a few seconds after I had been fumbling with it for a minute or two. The trick is to keep the tray only open far enough to keep your thumb(s) on it while taking off the old face plate.

Strengths: This DVD burner reads and writes DVDs at a remarkable speed.
Weaknesses:None
Overall Evaluation: This product writes DVDs in less than 10 minutes. The included software is user friendly, however, I use another DVD copy program to create back-up copies of my collection. In less than an hour, I can create copies of three separate DVDs writing at a speed of 18x. Before purchasing this product, I used the Sony DRU-810A which writes at a speed of 8x. It is very clear to see that this DVD writer is twice the speed as the DRU-810A and without any problems.

Strengths: SHORT DEPTH. AT LEAST 6 GENERATIONS OF THE MODEL (LEARNING CURVE). READS DISCS WELL, ESPECIALLY SOME THAT HAVE TROUBLE IN OTHER DRIVES.
Weaknesses:BLACK ALTERNATE FACE PLATE 'NOT' AS AMPLY MARKED AS STANDARD WHITE (REALLY PICKY OBSERVATION). MORE EXPENSIVE (RETAIL + SONY BRANDNAME).
Overall Evaluation: Initially had a problem with burning speed (burning slowly). Sony technicians helped me find and resolve the issue (Needed to be made DMA instead of PIO mode). Have beeen successfully burning DVD's without a problem. I mostly burn verbatim brand, but have had success with others (TDK, SONY, Fuji, Playo). I also have a Plextor 716A and a SONY 710A. Purchased this because of the 18X speed, plus the 12x dvd-ram speed. It replaced a Lite On drive that is to be used in building a computer for my wife. Note: With the submission of a $20 rebate from SONY, the drives final cost will be close to online OEM drives.
