Strengths: USB print server / USB backup

    Weaknesses:Setup seems backwards

Overall Evaluation: Worked great, the few problems I had were easily solved. The built in backup initially had errors, but formatting the USB drive solved it easily. The setup menus seem to be a bit backwards, all the set up options start at the bottom of the page and work up. I print to it whenever, then turn on the printer when I'm ready to print everything. Works best with a laser printer that powers up quickly.Secure folder setup was easy (use your windows password - didn't seem to be indicated in the manual). Works great for pictures and music on a home network. I'm going to look into their network multimedia setup.

Strengths: USB Print Server - Works great with my Samsung lasee printer. Supports GigE. Can be hacked. Mature firmware support package (at least 2nd generation). Very quiet, set-it and forget it

Weaknesses:Expensive solution for a network drive. Backup to external USB via a proprietary interface (i.e., requires another LinkStation to recover from backup). Doesn't support RAID, etc.

Overall Evaluation: This is my 2nd Buffalo LinkStation Network Hard Drive. My first LinkStation was a 160GB LinkStation -- the hard drive crashed after about 18 months of use. Fortunately I had the LinkStation backed up to an external USB drive using the LinkStation firmware package. I didn't realize that if the LinkStation crashed, you would need to replace the LinkStation before you could recover the data from the external USB drive. Once I plugged the 300GB LinkStation into my network I had a little difficulty getting the installation software to recognize the drive. I ended up logging into the drive via my web browser and configuring the drive that way. Once set-up, the LinkStation is very quiet and performance appears to be better than my LinkStation 160GB. I haven't actually measured the performance but there are web sites that have performed actual testing and shown an improvement w this device over the non-Gig LinkStation. I have it tied to a 100MB port on my wireless router so I haven't really tested the GigE capability. For less than $300, this is an excellent product that provides an easy way to backup up multiple computers on a network. I love the USB print server which is connected to my Samsung laser printer. Please note that the print server works well with print devices supporting one-way printing. One word of additional caution, if you are trusting this device for your backups, I would suggest backing up the backup if you are going to rely on the LinkStation as a central storage hub for your system.

Strengths: Simple, sleek, and easy to set up

    Weaknesses:Didn't notice any

Overall Evaluation: Got it today, had it working within 10 minutes. Easy setup yet full control over shares if wanted. I wanted simple storage device to back up our home computer network to and this is it. It also has a USB port to allow you to plug in a USB drive to back it up to if you want redundancy. Looks good so far and I love it having 10/100/1000 capability that the Maxtor did not have. I have used Maxtor external drives for years but this drive cost less and reviews were good so why pay more?
