Strengths: Great picture at 3+Mbps, works on Palm OS, Windows Mobile 6 and PocketPC. Can stream your HD programing as well.

Weaknesses: With HD Connect (sold separately) the signal streamed is none HD signal. No software for Symbian OS. Most importantly bad picture without high upstream speed.

Overall Evaluation: Quality of picture away from your home network depends on what your upstream speed is, 3+Mbps is great, 2+Mbps is good, 1Mbps is ok, less than that don't look that great. Some basic info: Basic cable/DSL gets 3+Mbps download speed but their upstream is only 512Kbps. Higher rate cable/DSL is 10+Mbps download but upload is 1Mbps. Now if you look into FIOS (Fiber Optic Service for home) would be great, their basic setup upstream speed starts at 1Mbps and their higher end upstream is 3+Mbps. So before you buy find out your upstream speed if you plan on buying this for watching your TV away from home.

Strengths: The ability to watch TV anywhere in your house on the computer or anywhere in the world

Weaknesses: Customer service for setting up remote viewing is poor. You may have to disable your firewall and security to make remote access to work. Customer service is poor due to lack of knowledge

Overall Evaluation: I had a friend who had the original slingbox, and recommended that I get the slingbox pro. I bought the slingbox pro because I wanted to control multiple video sources remotely and have the potential of using HD in the future. I was able to set it up pretty easily for viewing in the house. The video quality is great and I can control the TV from my computer. However, I am still having problems with remote viewing. I have called customer service but the rep seemed to want to get me off the phone and put me on hold several times.

    Duration of ownership:

    Strengths: Easy setup

Weaknesses: Only one person can watch your slingbox at a time. HD connection is extra, should be built in.

Overall Evaluation: I owned the 1st generation slingbox classic and I upgraded to the slingbox pro. I can see the difference in the picture quality. The newer slingbox pro is better and has a cleaner, more smooth picture than the original. I use this with my HDTV and TiVo and it works great. My only complaint is that I wish the HD connect was built instead of an extra accessory purchase.

    Duration of ownership:

Strengths: Attractive design, easy setup, good video quality(LAN), many cables included, IR blaster, remote control software

Weaknesses: No web client. Extra cost for Mobile software (Windows Mobile and Symbian). Extra cost for HD cable ($50)

Overall Evaluation: The Slingbox Pro was easy for me to setup, configure, and install in my home. Its remote control software on PCs are easy to use and can be customized for my cable box. I am satisfied with the video quality when streamming in my home. but the quality dropped quite a bit if I am away from home. Maybe higher upload bandwidth will help (mine is 384Kbps). The device is smaller than I anticipated. However, I need to pay extra money for the HD cable and software client for mobile devices. and it does not work with regular cell phones. MUST be a smartphone. Overall, it's a good buy if you can get it for $200.

Strengths: -it works & works well.-hd cable is extra, not a big deal for me, but adds complexity & more wires (which we all hate)

Weaknesses: -palm pilot client is an additional $29

Overall Evaluation: After 10 years with DirecTV, we switched to basic analog cable & it was quite a shock (bad). Dealing with Comcast left much to be desired. A little research & we found out that our home in central NJ was recently provisioned for Verizon FiOS. My parents don't use even a fraction of the 20mb down 5mb up; and I don't subscribe to cable, so I thought this could be a great way to check out Slingbox. I purchased the Slingbox Pro at BestBuy where they were running a promotion where they were throwing in the $50 HD cable for free. Setup was a bit tricky even with Slingbox's excellent instructions & help from slingcommunity.com & portforward.com; as my understanding of networking ports such as TCP & UDP is limited & the guides on those sites referred to an older firmware for the Actiontec router/modem that Verizon provided. After much trial & error I'm able to connect to our Verizon HD DVR & watch whatever I like, even schedule recordings, from my home in New York. I had some friends as far as San Francisco try it & they concurred that it was the coolest thing EVER. Sling recently released a client for Palm's 700p & it really is THE killer app (beware, streaming video at 200k is going to eat into your battery time!). I couldn't be happier with our Slingbox. If you're not technically proficient, be warned, it can be a daunting task. Additionally, as Sling discloses, you should have at least a 500k upload stream (luckily with FiOS we regularly get 1700k streams). Additionally, I should note, I was not able to update the firmware on the Slingbox. That said, everything is working fine, so unless they add additional features that I want or if something stops working (knock on wood). I think I'll leave things as is. If you pay for cable & have under utilized broadband, seriously consider checking out this product. I find myself using the application mostly when I'm bored waiting for people or in a cab.

Strengths: Video quality is spectacular when I connected to the Slingbox over my home network. It is easy to set up.

Weaknesses: None really. It is a little bit bigger than the Slingbox AV and Slingbox Tuner but offers more with the larger size.

Overall Evaluation: The Slingbox PRO is like the current Slingbox, only on steroids. If you want to watch your home TV system on the road, the new Slingbox Pro is the state of the art in place-shifting video. With up to four simultaneous inputs (including an optional high-definition dongle), the Pro solves the dilemma of whether to connect the cable box, TiVo or DVD player. Now you don't have to choose. You can even connect a home security cam, to keep an eye on the house or the kids wherever you are. Viewing remotely, I found that the lowest quality setting provided the best results.I found, for instance, that switching to the High Action setting made sporting events look much better. If you're looking to watch your home TV on the road, and have more that one video source, the Slingbox Pro is the best answer going.

Strengths: Watch your Satellite TV or Cable LIVE from ANYWHERE in the world using your pc/laptop/pda/smartphone...for FREE !!!!!

Weaknesses: Currently need pc/laptop/pda/smartphone to watch AND you first need to connect to your home internet to configure

Overall Evaluation: I have DirectTV and wanted to add a new box in my son's bedroom. Not wanting to pay additional monthly rental & access fees, I was looking for options, and spotted Sling Media. Circuit City just dropped the price of the SlingBox Pro to $229 and since I occasionally travel I figured I'd give it a shot. UNBELIEVABLY good picture on my 2-yr-old Dell XPS laptop (wireless) and on my son's home-built gaming pc! It's amazing how you can use the on-screen Virtual Remote Control to access the DirecTV menu; you can be in a hotel room and still watch your favorite shows/movies/payperview/tivo/home video/whatever and if you're using free internet access it costs NOTHING! DEVELOPING NEWS: later in 2007 Sling Media will release the SlingCatcher (under $200 they say) that will allow you to catch your SlingBox signal on any other TV without the need for that additional costly Satellite or Cable box. I have the additional ($50) HD dongle on backorder (no sense in limiting DirecTV HD to only one room in the house, eh?). Oh yeah, it took less than an hour to hook up my SlingBox Pro, download updates, and configure my laptop & (encrypted) wireless Belkin preN home network router. Amazing!
