Strengths: Looks great, nice wide screen, solid keyboard, media keys, and the great Vista.
Weaknesses: Only comes with 512mb ram, which limits its full potential.
Overall Evaluation: The Toshiba a135-s2386 is another great laptop from Toshiba. It's priced pretty well for what you get. You get Vista Basic, a nice 15" wide screen LCD, and Intel Pentium Dual Core technology. It looks really sleek with it's silver and black colors. Case feels fairly solid, and keyboard does too. I like the media keys - they are well-placed and responsive. My only complaint is that is comes with 512mb RAM, so it's full potential is limited out of the box. However, it is well-priced, so upgrading to a GB of RAM shouldn't break the bank too badly. I recommend!

Duration of ownership:
Strengths: Fast process, dual-layer dvd burner, very good wireless signal.
Weaknesses: Getting warm or even hot after several hours. battery life is a little bit short.
Overall Evaluation: I have been using this laptop for three weeks. I found it is a very nice machine. The screen is very bright and clear. I like the dvd burner, becuase before I need to have an external dvd burner to burn a dvd. Another good thing is the wireless signal which is very good. Never drops. I would recommend it to everyone.

Duration of ownership:
Strengths: Toshiba Brand, Pentium Dual Core, and low price
Weaknesses: Vista sluggish.
Overall Evaluation: As of now, the top in both quality and price is Toshiba. I have use Sony (which is good but you pay for the premium brand), HP/Compaq has been horrible for me, same thing for Dell. But this thing is sluggish with only 512MB when using with Vista Home. I have to upgrade to 2GB for it to run smoothly. I was able to play WOW and CounterStrike fine. The wireless is great, it can pick up from one end of my house to the other end (something my old notebook couldn't). The DVD writer is great, I test out all of the blank dvd media and it's burning fine on all generic or brand name media. The dvd writer on Sony notebook are extremely picky. This notebook is a little heavy though since my old one is 14.1". But I bought this a desktop replacement so it's worth it for the price I pay for it.

Strengths: Relatively inexpensive price, relatively light weight (approx 6 pounds),Resolution and color from screen is great, memory is upgradable, comes with restore CD,Looks pleasing to the ey
Weaknesses: really slow running on Vista (512 mb of ram),Heats up quite fast compared to other laptops,
Overall Evaluation: I bought this as an inexpensive gift for me mom. She isn't very computer savvy, but for her this computer is still way too slow. The good thing is memory is upgradable which is what I will do. Compared to Dells and HP, this Toshiba in particular heats up a bit more rapidly. My sis has a Toshiba older version but doesn't heat up as fast. Once I upgrade the ram, it should run find. The only other issue I had with it was the wireless connection;it isn't as strong as my HP or Dell, because it disconnects extremely often. But I'm hoping to figure out how to fix that. All and all, a good computer for its price once memory is upgraded.

Strengths: Design, Dual-Core Processor
Weaknesses: Not enough RAM for Vista
Overall Evaluation: This is a very nice machine and with a RAM upgrade it performs well. With the stock RAM of 512MB it is very slow when running Vista. I highly recommend adding at least another 512MB of RAM. The DVD burner is a nice addition for a lower priced notebook. Screen quality is excellent.

Duration of ownership:
Strengths: Cheap price, good performance with dual core, big and bright screen
Weaknesses: The size is quite big, and heavy
Overall Evaluation: This laptop comes with Intel T2080 CPU, which is a dual core CPU at 1.73GHz and 1MB L2 cache. This CPU is not as good as the core dual one (has 2MB cache), but it is way better than the celeron. It has speed step technology to save battery and make your laptop not too hot. For the price under $500, this is the fastest laptop I can find! The toshiba LCD screen is perfect, with bright view. The keyboard is also feels good, but they don't have the right "ctl" key. The size of this laptop is also quite big and it weights about 6.8lbs. For a desktop replacement, this laptop has the best value for the price!

Strengths: Good Build QualityBig screenGood layout of keyboard
Weaknesses: 512 MB memoryVista Home basicBattery life
Overall Evaluation: I have a Toshiba Celeron before buying this one and the primary reason for buying this toshiba is the good experience I had with the earlier machine. This has a solid build quality, not like the dell machines you see. The 15.4 widescreen is good for movies etc. However the battery life is not so good. This is a problem with most toshibas. As you know 512mb ram is useless for Vista, So you need to upgrade and spend at least $35 more for 1gb ram. also, I would have preferred Home premium on this, since home basic does not have all the frills.

Strengths: Dual core Intel Pentium CPU, Double layer DVD burner/DVD-ROM, Reliable and Inexpensive
Weaknesses: See below
Overall Evaluation: OfficeDepot sell this for $479 after $150 mail-in rebate. Plus you can get some bundle stuff for free (printer, USB drive, software???). Well you can not resist it at this price. What can you complaint for a notebook with sub $500. You can do a lot with this one: web surfing, word processing, personal financing, watch video, burn CDs or DVDs, and a lot ? The machine comes with a dual-core CPU! Think about it, a CPU like this would cost $500 even two years ago! Right, we should be happy with it.The Toshiba?s products are more reliable, compare to the products manufactured many years ago.The only complaint is installed memory as mentioned by many others. So what? Buy 1GB or 2GB memory, DDR2s are cheap now. Make sure you get the right one (some higher speed ones are not downward compatible).

Strengths: price is cheap, lots of online deals bring it down to $450ish and includes some freebies, beautiful bright screen
Weaknesses: needs lots of initial updates to improve speed (spend a full day doing this), needs more ram
Overall Evaluation: This laptop is an awesome budget laptop that has it all. Dual core processor, albeit bottom of the line one, plenty of hd space, dvd-burner, several ports, etc. It does the job for what I need it to do. If you need a work laptop that does graphic intensive applications, like 3D or games, I wouldn't get this one. Vista is power hungry and drains all your resources. Upgrading your ram, downloading the latest windows updates, and uninstalling all the unnecessary software, are the first things you should do to speed up this laptop. Out of the box, it was pathetically slow, reminded me of the 300mhz days where even moving folders was dreadful. After a fresh restart, the system uses 65% of your ram at the least. But after doing those updates the speeds were great again. The battery is decent, nothing outstanding, it drains on the quicker side though. But overall, the price is really attractive, there isn't very much cost that you could lose when this laptop ages, compared to buying a $2000 laptop.

Overall Evaluation: For the typical user who only plans to surf the Internet and use a laptop for light use, this machine seems perfect. I would definitely recommend this machine to anyone in the category of users who aren't looking for the most powerful machine for the heaviest of tasks, but are light users and are not so demanding on a computer.
